The Future of Recorded Music - Part 5 Page 6
2004 thru 2006
"Legitimate" (non-pirated) music downloads reach 144 million (139.4 million singles, 4.6 million albums).
CD sales in the U.S. drop 25% from the all-time high in 2000 to 705.4 million units. (But the problem isn't just downloads. Higher prices, and today's pop music - which sucks like never before - are also to blame.)
As of February 22, more than 1 billion songs have been downloaded from iTunes.
Has it come to this? At press time, Epic planned to release a "new" Fiona Apple CD: iTunes Originals, an album that has been selling for $9.99 on iTunes since Valentine's Day. iCaramba!
