1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Warner, 2 discs). Finally, the definitive edition of one of cinema's all-time classics, a movie that could have been made for home theater. 2. Pan's Labyrinth (Platinum Series; New Line, 2 discs). A DVD with a gorgeous color palette and a director, Guillermo del Toro, who's very adept at discussing his work. 3. Planet Earth (BBC/Warner, 5 discs). Our home - like you've never seen it before. The visuals in this TV documentary series are absolutely stunning. The DVD set comes with a 150-minute companion documentary, Planet Earth: The Future, and 2 hours of behind-the-scenes footage. 4. Army of Shadows (The Criterion Collection, 2 discs). A long-forgotten film, made in 1970 but just released in America last year. The transfer is rich in shadows, and the extras give all the background you could want on this fascinating film. 5. Breathless (The Criterion Collection, 2 discs). This dazzling transfer is worthy of such a highly venerated, groundbreaking film. As are the excellent extras, including interviews with Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Jean Seberg, as well as two video essays, an 80-minute documentary, a Godard short, and an 80-page booklet containing François Truffaut's original film treatment and Godard's scenario. 6. Ace in the Hole (The Criterion Collection, 2 discs). Criterion has rescued this film from the abyss. It deserves to stand alongside director Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard as one of the most cynical films Hollywood ever produced. 7. Ratatouille (Disney/Pixar). Pixar's films always look and sound stunning on DVD, and this might be the studio's best feature in several years. 8. The Departed (Warner, 2 discs). A return to form for Martin Scorsese, and a DVD set stuffed full of engaging extras. 9. Face/Off (Special Collector's Edition; Paramount, 2 discs). Play this one loud. Even louder than that. 10. Taxi Driver (Sony, 2 discs). A movie that stands as one of the defining works of the 1970s, finally on a worthy DVD.
